Chrome App Deprecation - Future of the MyPC Chrome App
As many of you are aware, Google is phasing out support for Chrome Apps. Below is an official timeline from Google outlining the deprecation schedule:
Chrome App Deprecation Timeline
July 2025 (ChromeOS M138): Final ChromeOS release supporting user-installed Chrome apps. Admin-installed apps in kiosk mode will be disabled by default but can be re-enabled via policy.
July 2026 (ChromeOS M150): Final release supporting Chrome apps in kiosk mode. Devices on the Long-Term Support (LTS) channel will continue to receive support until April 2027.
February 2027 (ChromeOS M156): Admin-installed Chrome apps in user sessions will be disabled by default and require policy changes to re-enable.
February 2028 (ChromeOS M168): Final ChromeOS release with any Chrome app support. LTS devices can continue using Chrome apps until October 2028. No exceptions will be granted.
What does this mean for the MyPC Chrome App?
The MyPC Chrome App is currently deployed via Google Enterprise as an admin-installed application. Based on Google’s timeline, this means our app will remain functional until at least February 2027.
What are our plans?
We’ve already developed a Chrome Extension to replace the existing Chrome App and will be releasing it shortly. Here are the key changes:
Communication Protocol: The extension will support only HTTP(S) communication. So your MyPC server installation will need to be configured to use HTTP(S) communication.
User Interface Updates:
The session bar at the top of the screen has been removed.
A new desktop widget will display the remaining session time.
All system messages will now appear as centre-screen dialogs.
We’ll share more details and rollout instructions soon.
If you have any questions or need support during the transition, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
